Assignment 2 Part 1: Artists who challenge my thoughts on drawing

Claude Monet, Houses by the Sea, 1882

This is an impressionism drawing. Monet expresses his emotion in this drawing. He also seems to use the idea of imagination. There is are very rough and rushed visible lights on the brick of the buildings. Though rushed, the drawing is shown to be very organized and neat. The drawing has a very unique use of gradation with visible scribbles. I like how there is a use of light and dark in this drawing. The light looks as if the sun is shining on the buildings. This challenges what my thoughts on drawings, because this drawing looks to be a bunch of scribbles, which creates the detail and texture to the drawing. I am also fascinated how the scribble gradation, use of light and colour of the paper that seems to be very rough off white paper, which gives a sense of natural colour palette to the drawing.

The Rock of Montmajour with Pine Trees, Vincent Van Gogh, July 1888

This is a drawing with reed pen, which is a pen that creates vigorous lines that bring a sense of texture and detail to the drawing. The reason Van Gogh create this drawing was that he was very fascinated with the view of the hill. This view was what inspired Van Gogh to create a series of this hill drawing with a pen. The drawing seems to have rushed lines across the hill and on the trees, which creates a unique textured gradation. The way Van Gogh made this drawing seems to give an illusion of a cliff. The use lines as texture and shade not also create an illusion of a cliff, though also creates a sense of light being shined from behind the cliff. I also like the use of a beige paper for the drawing. That paper is giving a sense of a light beige to a dark brown palette.

Both of these drawings use many scribbles and rough lines that create a piece full of detail and with lots of texture. Those lines give a really unique gradation. This challenged me of what I think of drawing because from looking at these artists and their drawings, rough lines and scribbles can create a unique drawing with a lot of texture and detail. I am also fascinated how the scribble gradation, use of light and colour of the paper gives a sense of natural beige colour palette to the drawings.
